I know we have some folks that try to stay in shape, for health reasons, or just to maintain their appearance. We've had some do 'Zumba', or go to exercise classes. And when January comes, the gyms are full of people either following through on a resolution, or trying to lose their holiday weight.
Rev. David Jeremiah has 5 points that help keep us spiritually fit. They will help get us in shape, and keep us maintained as we go through the new year. May as well get a head start!
-Hear the Word! Faith comes from hearing the word. Do ya think once a week will BUILD your faith? Would working out once a week build any muscles? We have Sunday School, and a minister that is offering several Bible studies each week, presently one during days and one evenings. We start choir with devotions- come on out for the first 10 minutes- you can even stay and warm-up with us! The Lord loves that worship too.
-Read the Word. This is a great time to plan your 'through the Bible in a year'. Or read through the New Testament in a year. Or the Psalms. The Bible is the Lord's letter to us. The website 'navigators.org' has several options of reading plans.
-Study the Word. You can do this by a word study through your concordance- such as, how is the word 'faith' used through the Bible? Or get into one of the organized Bible studies. Challenge the Lord to lead you in your growth.
-Memorize the Word. I remember hearing stories of the Viet Nam vets that were in the Hanoi Hilton, an horrible prison. When they were able, they put together as much scripture as they could remember, and would encourage each other with it through code or other ways they had devised. What could we have contributed if we were put in that position? The Navigators (navigators.org), a non-denominational Christian organization, has listed at their site a 'topical memory system' that gives you some leading on memorizing. It helps build the Word into you! Ps. 119:105-Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
-Meditate on the Word. Joshua 1:8 tells us that we need to meditate on the word, day and night. It can be translated 'to speak or utter'. I feel this is the way to get the word the 18 inches from your head down to your heart. Ps. 119:99- I have better understanding and deeper insight that all my teachers, because Your testimonies are my meditation.
The Lord is so gracious to us. As we go into the new year, determine to be more into the Word!
